John Humphrey Spender was known internationally as a photographer, painter and printmaker. He was born in London, brother to the poet Stephen Spender. He studied architecture at the Architectural Association. Spender exhibited at the Royal Academy, in the provinces and abroad, and had one-man painting shows at the Redfern and Leicester Galleries, and the New Art Centre. He also designed carpets, plastics, wallpapers, and textiles, and won four Council of Industrial Design Awards. Spender was also a tutor at the Textile School, Royal College of Art.
Examples of his work are held in a number of public collections, including the Tate Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Government Art Collection. He lived for some years near Maldon, in Essex.
